A frequently asked question at the recent Parent & Child Expo in Auckland was:

“At what age should I wean my baby out of the Safe T Sleep Sleepwrap?”

Snug safe sleep Newborn up to 3 years old.

The Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® product was originally designed for use with babies in the high risk SIDS period. Swaddled newborn babies enjoy its comfort and safety too.

We have found that people like to introduce older babies to the Sleepwrap for the following reasons:

• To give the comforting feeling of security
• To help keep blankets on
• Ease of travel
• Ease with transition from cot to bed
• More restful sleeping
• To help prevent cot/bed accidents.
• To aid with positioning

To introduce the Sleepwrap to an older child, simply use education through play, by using a favourite toy or teddy and explain how the Sleepwrap will keep them safe and warm, showing how teddy loves the Sleepwrap etc.

Many people use the Safe T Sleep™ Sleepwrap® product with special needs children also.

We are told that it is fantastic on boats, where it is used with or without a leighcloth newborn up to 7 years of age! Read more here

An older child out of the high SIDS risk period may be taught to turn within the Sleepwrap® and sleep in their desired position.

It’s a wrap!

The Sleepwrap is a wrap. It is an AID to positive nurturing parenting skills and safe bed making practices.

It is NOT intended as a restraint for a wide-awake tossing infant. If you are experiencing sleep problems with your child, know that this is a common challenge with parenting and that there are many resources to assist you in the community e.g. The Parenting Place and on the web. We at Safe T Sleep (NZ) Ltd will help you where we can.

Just as a car seat is designed for safe traveling and not leaving baby in the car while shopping, the Sleepwrap is designed for safe sleeping to help ensure your baby will not turn, creep, climb, fall or get cold during sleep and the few minutes before and after sleep.

Therefore, after you have fed, winded, changed, sang to, and cuddled baby, the last thing to lovingly and snugly wrap around your loved, relaxed, sleepy (not necessarily asleep) baby, is the Sleepwrap You then tuck a large sheet and/or breathable blanket right underneath the sides and bottom of the mattress
